TUI

4.2. TUI — An Interactive Interface Right Inside the Terminal

Role

The TUI (Terminal User Interface) is a more visual interface layer built right on top of the terminal — it still runs over SSH/console as usual, but with layout, widgets, and shortcuts instead of plain command lines. This is the environment that fits a long working session, where you need to watch the agent’s state visually while talking to it.

Extensible, not just out of the box

For deeper customization, Hermes exposes “extension seams” that let you build a wrapping CLI (a wrapper CLI) without touching the whole internal logic — add your own widgets, shortcuts, and custom slash commands — while still inheriting all of the TUI’s original behavior.

Notes

  • The TUI is the natural choice when working over SSH but wanting an experience closer to a graphical application — nothing to install beyond the terminal connection you already have.
  • If your team has specific needs (a private kanban board, custom monitoring panels), consider building a wrapper CLI through the extension hooks instead of forking the Hermes source directly — easier to maintain when Hermes ships a new version.
