Terminal

4.1. Terminal — The Original Interface, for One-Off Commands

Role

This is where every journey with Hermes begins — installation, the setup wizard, and all administrative commands (hermes doctor, hermes update, hermes config show…) run through the terminal. For short tasks that do not need a long interactive state, typing the command straight in and getting the result is the fastest route.

When to stay in the Terminal and not move up to the TUI

  • Run a single CLI command and exit (check configuration, view logs, manage skills/plugins).
  • Run inside automation scripts or CI/CD.
  • SSH quickly into a VPS to debug a specific issue.

Notes

  • For administrative operations (update, doctor, backup), the Terminal is always the most reliable choice — it does not depend on whether a graphical interface is running.
  • When debugging an error and the systemd log is not clear enough, going back to the Terminal and running the command directly under the exact operating user always yields clearer information.
