News

18.3. News — Following a Topic in the News

A periodic news-digest job

hermes cron create "0 9 * * 1" \
"Search for news about 'topic X' and compile a weekly report with links" \
  --deliver telegram

Useful for founders, researchers, or anyone tracking the competitive landscape — instead of manually searching every week, you receive a pre-compiled report delivered to the right channel.

Extension: watching tech repos/projects

The same pattern applies to tracking GitHub repositories (new issues, newly merged PRs, new releases) — use the gh CLI (covered in 11.2) inside the cron prompt, filter by time window, and report only when there is something new.

Notes

  • For broad news topics, always bound the scope clearly in the prompt (specific keywords, preferred sources) — avoid rambling reports full of irrelevant items.
  • Attach sources (links) to every report — as per the principle stated in 8.3, this lets you verify for yourself instead of just trusting the agent’s summary.
  • For tracking many sources at once (multiple competitors, multiple repos), split them into separate small jobs per source instead of one big combined job — much easier to debug when one source’s fetch fails.
