9.1. User Profile — A Profile of You as a Person
What USER.md stores
Identity, preferences, communication style, and working habits of the user. This is clearly different from MEMORY.md, which is meant for notes about the agent’s environment and projects.
Example of real content
Preference: TypeScript over JavaScript. Keep communication concise, no long explanations.
Skill level: senior backend, no need to explain basic concepts.
Timezone: GMT+7. Does not work on weekends.
How saving gets triggered
No special command is required. You can just say it naturally: “Remember that I prefer TypeScript,” or let the agent infer it from repeated interaction patterns over time, such as consistently preferring short answers or repeatedly steering questions in the same direction.
Practical lessons
- Invest in “seeding” USER.md early with a short introduction session, such as your name, role, and usual tools, instead of letting it accumulate slowly over weeks. That matches the recommendation already mentioned in 20.1.
- Do not cram project or technical details in here. USER.md should describe who you are, not what you are currently working on. That belongs in 9.2/9.3.
- Because the limit is only ~500 tokens, prioritize durable traits like communication style and technical level over temporary details like being busy with project X this week. Short-lived details belong in the session, not in the long-term profile.
